DIFFICULTIES IN WESTERN SOCIETIES AND THE RISE OF NEW WORLDS (1971-2018) Migrations. The Balkan Route Starting from 2015, refugees from the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan have set out for Central Europe along the Balkan route, a path that usually begins in Turkey and passes through Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Serbia. The arrival of more than one million refugees, among which it is often difficult to distinguish economic migrants from refugees claiming the right to asylum, has had a strong impact on the political situations in Europe. Some countries in Central Eastern Europe, such as Hungary, have closed their borders. They justify their decisions by declaring that they are worried about the constant migrations of their younger citizens toward Western Europe, and they are afraid of losing their cultural identity. Germany has opened its borders to refugees with the intention of integrating them into its labour market, but this project has raised strong tensions. The management of the flow of migrants is a very controversial issue because it influences the relationships among European countries, especially those which are members of the European Union, and the relationships between the EU and the countries to the South of the Mediterranean Sea.
