Migrations. The Mediterranean Route The global phenomenon of migration is caused by the outbreak of wars and the persistency of poverty. This is also fostered by the diffusion of new communication technologies. These realistically allow the different standards of life in the North and in the South of the world to be compared. Today around 60 million refugees in the world are escaping wars, crises and famines. The Mediterranean Sea in particular has become a crucial area for the migration routes from Africa to Europe. Thousands of migrants have set sail and continue to sail from the Tunisian and Libyan coasts, in search of safety and better life conditions. They embark on expensive and risky journeys, often arranged by unscrupulous criminals. According to the most recent estimate, between 2002 and 2017 around 35,000 people died in shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. Since the collapse of Gaddafi s regime in Libya in 2011 more and more migrants have been flowing from Central and Northern Africa toward the European coasts. The most tragic shipwreck took place in April 2015, when a ship capsized in the Sicilian Channel, and more than 800 migrants died. ACTIVITY 4.C Read the text Migrations.
