dIRItto 191 CLIL - the United Nations CLIL - THE UNITED NATIONS AUDIO The United Nations is an international organisation established in 1945 following the Second World War, that had caused widespread destruction, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. The UN does this by: working to prevent conflict; creating the conditions for lasting peace among the States; helping parties in conflict make peace and peacekeeping, through lightly armed personnel for interposition, observation, supervision, and reporting. The UN is based in New York and is currently made up of 193 Member States, and its mission and work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. Due to the powers vested in its Charter and its unique international character, the United Nations can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as climate change, sustainable development, human rights, peace and security, disarmament, terrorism, gender equality, governance, humanitarian and health emergencies, food production, and more.
