dIRItto CLIL - Italy s government buildings CLIL - ITALY S GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS 163 AUDIO In Italy it is fairly common for mass media to refer to the government institutions by name of the building and not by its function. For example, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is often referred to as the Farnesina , a metonym (that is, as a word or phrase used in place of another with which it s closely associated) from its headquarters, the Palazzo della Farnesina in Rome. The main buildings that host Italian political institutions are the following. The Quirinale (often referred to as Il Colle, the Hill ) is one of the primary places in the life of the Italian Republic. This building, which sits atop one of Rome s famous seven hills, is where the President of the Italian Republic has had his official residence and offices since 1948. It used to be the residence of noble families and the summer residence of Popes. In 1871 it became the residence of the King of Italy. Palazzo Montecitorio is where Italy s lower house of parliament, the Chamber of Deputies (known as Camera dei deputati) sits and conducts the process of government. Palazzo Madama, which houses Italy s upper house, or senate (which in Italian is Senato), is situated in piazza Madama, very close to the famous piazza Navona. Palazzo Chigi is the building, located in central Rome, with a side on piazza Colonna and another on via del Corso, which serves as a meeting place for Italy s cabinet or Council of Ministers (which in Italian is Consiglio dei ministri). The Palace of Justice of Rome is nicknamed Palazzaccio ( ugly palace ) and is located in the Prati district. It is the seat of the Supreme Court of Cassation (Corte suprema di Cassazione) and of the Judicial Public library. 1. Answer the following questions. 1.
