DIRItto 151 CLIL - Regional and Local Government in Italy CLIL - REGIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN ITALY AUDIO In accordance with Article 5 of the Italian Constitution, the Italian Republic is one and indivisible while recognising the principles of local autonomy and decentralisation. Italy is divided in Regions, Provinces, Municipalities and metropolitan cities. There are 15 regions with ordinary status and 5 regions to which special autonomy has been granted by Article 116 of the Italian Constitution, which are Sicily, Sardinia, Trentino-South Tyrol, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Aosta Valley. The Trentino-South Tyrol region also comprises the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano. Every region has a statute that serves as a regional constitution, determining the form of government and the fundamental principles of the organisation and the functioning of the region, as prescribed by the Constitution of Italy Article 123. Regarding the relationship between the national and subnational levels, the Constitution guarantees both local self-government and the subsidiarity principle. It gives indications on the exclusive competencies of the State, concurrent competencies, and exclusive competencies of the Regions (Article 117). 1. Answer the following questions. 1.
