MODULO 3 The Holocaust The persecution and systematic killing of European Jews during the Second World War by the Nazi regime and its collaborators is referred to with the terms Holocaust or Shoah. The first term comes from ancient Greek and means a sacrificial offering, usually a male animal, which was completely burnt. The second one is a Hebrew word which literally means the catastrophe . The horrific event that was perpetrated against the European Jews has also been defined as a genocide. WARM UP ACTIVITY 1.A In your workbook, describe image A and image B using the following words: barbed wire tram Star of David enclosure soldier BEFORE AFTER A B ACTIVITY 1.B Now attribute one of the following descriptions to each image. IMAGE . Concentration camps: they were places where civilians and soldiers were deported to, in order to be exploited for work. In the Nazi system of concentration camps millions of people were enslaved and died of mistreatment, deprivations and executions. IMAGE . Ghetto: the term refers to an urban area in which Jews were forced to live in Medieval Europe. During WWII, after the Nazi occupation of the Eastern European cities, ghettos were once again established. This policy of ghettoization was the first step towards the mass extermination of Jews.
